Major Mandy Martin Monograph
As a deeply ethical person, her art celebrated all that was
beautiful in the human spirit and in our natural environment.
Our brilliant collaborator and wonderful friend Mandy Martin (1952-2021) was a highly influential artist, educator and a passionate environmentalist. Her painting practice emphatically explored the often fraught relationship between humans and the natural world.
In the final weeks of her life, Mandy asked that donations be directed toward an annual artist grant supporting creative responses to the climate crisis. Named in her honour and administered thanks to Capital Arts Patrons Organisation (CAPO), the award supported Anna Madeleine Raupach (2022), Annika Romeyn (2023) and Erica Seccombe (2024) with a prize of $7,500 each.
After three years, Mandy’s family and friends have reassessed how best to honour her work, contribution and environmental legacy. While the award supported worthwhile projects, there was a shared desire to create something more focussed on Mandy’s exceptional practice.
Mandy Martin: Artist / Explorer / Change Agent will be published by Melbourne University Press through its Miegunyah imprint in 2027. Edited by Kelly Gellatly, former Director of The Ian Potter Museum of Art at the University of Melbourne, the book will bring together leading writers and curators to reflect on the major themes of Mandy’s forty-year career.
Despite Mandy’s national and international reputation, there has never been a substantial monograph published on her work. This book will create a lasting record of her artistic, environmental and collaborative legacy for artists, writers, curators, institutions, students and the wider public.
For that reason, the remaining Mandy Martin award funds are now being directed towards the creation of this major monograph.
Along with the Australian Cultural Fund, CLIMARTE is proud to remain a supporting organisation for the Mandy Martin monograph project, continuing its important connection to Mandy’s dedicated environmental work.
